Dr. Jacob Joseph is a legal academic with over two decades of experience in teaching, research, academic administration and international legal consulting. Dr. Jacob is presently focusing on independent consulting, research, and writing while collaborating with academic institutions, government agencies, organisations and professional bodies through lectures, training programmes, and advisory assignments.

Dr. Jacob began his career in legal academia in 2002 as a member of faculty at the West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS), Kolkata. Subsequently he joined the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi as one of its founding faculty members. At NUALS, Dr. Jacob was actively involved in teaching and institution building for 18 years. Dr. Jacob has also served as a Professor of Law & Associate Dean - Post Graduate Studies (Academics) at Saveetha School of Law, SIMATS; Professor of Law at Vinayaka Mission's Law School, Chennai and also as an Associate Professor and Head of Post-Graduate and Research Department at the Bharat Mata School of Legal Studies (BSOLS), Aluva, Kerala, India. He has also delivered lectures as a visiting academic in various institutions, including a brief stint in 2023 at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security, University of Wollongong.

An innovator in curriculum design, Dr. Jacob Joseph has designed and introduced courses on fisheries law, food law and policy as well as national security and counter-terrorism laws thereby equipping students to engage with some of the most pressing challenges of our times. His research reflects the same forward-looking approach, with significant publications in the fields of fisheries law, environmental law, and criminal law, including the widely acclaimed books such as Select Legal and Policy Instruments on Marine Fisheries Conservation and Management and Cases and Materials on Legal Method (co-authored with Professor K. N. Chandrasekharan Pillai, Former Director of National Judicial Academy and Indian Law Institute).

Dr. Jacob has advised international organisations, government agencies and statutory authorities, including United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Kerala State Planning Board, and the Commissionerate of Food Safety, Kerala. He has contributed to legal and policy reforms through submissions, notably to the Joint Parliamentary Committee on Biological Diversity (Amendment) Bill, 2021.

Dr. Jacob is a regular invitee for various capacity enhancement programmes and he delivers specialised legal training to government officials, law enforcement personnel, judicial officers, and policymakers. His teaching and research engage critically with ocean governance, fisheries law, environmental law, food law as well as transnational and domestic dimensions of criminal law.
